Leakage current is the current that flows between electrically insulated metal parts or between live and grounded parts through surrounding media or insulation surfaces when a certain voltage is applied without faults. During normal operation, leakage current should be below a specified threshold. Design defects, aging, or faults can cause insulation failure, leading to electric shock or more severe accidents.
A leakage current tester is a safety instrument used to measure leakage current. It is widely used in the production and manufacturing of various electrical devices (industrial equipment, instruments, medical devices, household appliances, lighting fixtures, power tools, etc.).
Leakage current testers can be classified by application into: non-medical testers and medical testers.
· Body Impedance: The total impedance of the human body includes resistance and capacitance from the skin, blood, muscles, tissues, and connective parts. The total body impedance (Zr) the vector sum of internal impedance (Zi) and skin impedance (Zs).
· Impedance Behavior: The body's total impedance decreases with increasing voltage and increases with higher frequency.
· Standards such as IEC 60990 and GB/T 12113 specify various human impedance network models composed of resistors and capacitors.
· Typically, leakage current testers are equipped with these impedance networks to measure leakage currents by simulating the touch of a human body on the device's outer shell. This setup provides a realistic reflection of the device's insulation condition.
Therefore, calibration procedures include impedance network measurements to ensure that the built-in impedance networks of the testers meet standard requirements.
Leakage current is a crucial parameter in the safety performance of electrical equipment. The leakage current tester, used to measure this parameter, is an essential metrological tool. Its measurements directly impact product quality and user safety. To ensure that products meet insulation protection requirements, it is necessary to calibrate the tester either before use or periodically, to guarantee accuracy and performance.
